Independent Musician’s Strategic Pricing Guide

Empowering Your Business: Benchmarks, Real-World Value & Conversions

The Freedom to Price: Complete Business Autonomy

(Click to expand: Monthly Retainers, Term Commitments, and Annual Studio Infrastructure)

To secure stable, predictable revenue and eliminate last-minute cancellation income loss, independent studio business owners should move away from pay-per-lesson models and implement structured tuition packages:

  • Monthly Retainer / Tuition: Flat rate billed on the 1st of every month (e.g., $160 – $480+ per month depending on lesson length), guaranteeing 4 scheduled slots per month.
  • Quarterly / Term Commitments: Aligned with academic terms (Fall, Winter, Spring). Paid in full or via automated post-dated structures upfront to secure the time slot for the full 10-12 week cycle.
  • Yearly Studio Package: A comprehensive annual contract covering 30-40 weeks of instruction, studio class fees, and digital resources, offering a streamlined single-payment or fixed monthly infrastructure.

📈 7. Financial Autonomy: Beyond Work Dues
(Click to expand: Retirement planning and independent financial growth)

At Musicians Guild International, we do not charge work dues, and we do not oversee pension pools. We believe that 100% of your earnings belong to you.

As an independent business owner, your retirement security is in your hands. We strongly encourage all members to treat 10% to 15% of every invoice as a mandatory contribution to a personal tax-sheltered retirement account (such as an RRSP, TFSA, or similar local investment vehicles).

Pro Tip: By automating your savings via a pre-authorized contribution plan, you build your own “guild pension” without relying on external administration. Keep your money, manage your growth, and retire on your own terms.

💡 Your Business, Your Terms: Premium Adjustments
All premium parameters are left entirely to your professional discretion. You decide how to structure and apply charges for administrative work (Leader/Contractor duties), holiday premiums, short-notice booking calls, minimum hourly blocks, or doubling on secondary instruments based on what your time and your relationship with the client dictate.
